The Bang in Bangkok – Vertigo & Moon Bar Bangkok

Vertigo & Moon Bar at the Banyan Tree Bangkok

21/100 South Sathon Road Sathon, Bangkok 10120, Thailand

Did I tell you the story about a last minute cancelled international flight to Bangkok that resulted in flying to Sydney – Melbourne – Sydney – Bangkok in a day? Such was an insane 24 hours that lead to my first dining experience on a 10 day culinary adventure. A 15 flight hours and a 1 hour cab ride later, I’m climbing the stairs to the 61st level of the Banyan Tree hotel to reach the lofty Vertigo & Moon Bar – one of the reputable roof top dining experiences in Bangkok…and then it rained.

In a blog far far away, I’m sure there is a reference to a crazy lady who was laughing maniacally in the restaurant for no apparent reason and offering to eat in the rain. Rest assured, this was one of those moments where you could laugh or cry and I chose to laugh. Everyone on the rooftop was guided down the steps into the bar area where a DJ was playing Asian covers of pop songs (fun!), each table had plump leather poufs and a little dinner lamp – it was kitsch and kinda fun.

The foodie Gods were shining when a wayward waiter accidentally dropped and shattered a glass over me which resulted in a fabulous upgrade to a window lounge (literally with shoes off and feet up) that overlooked a misty Bangkok. It was a delightful change up and started me on my culinary adventure in style.

The Banyan Tree is a renown landmark in Bangkok with most TukTuk and taxis using it as a reference point. The Vertigo and Moon Bar will give you a stunning view of the city with a variety of menu options (fine dining, bar and casual). I chose a few dishes from the bar menu which was surprisingly generous. Absolute highlight was the Tom Yum rolls and Crispy pork belly. The other highlight was the cocktail list. If you love a good cocktail, this is a terrific place to plant yourself for a few too many hours.

Vertigo and Moon Bar was worth experiencing and when I return to Bangkok I will try again to get out on that rooftop and drink in beautiful Bangkok by night – even in the rain (I’m laughing maniacally in my head for effect).
